Take advantage of the fine weather as July is a perfect month for getting outdoors to bike, hike, discover and play. The whole region is wanting to be explored while the festival and sagra season is in full swing. A sagra is a festival that celebrates only one type of food, drink or product from a specific town and region.
And, it’s on July 2nd (and again on August 16th) when the Palio di Siena horse race begins and overtakes the central piazza. This historical and elaborated contest involves 10 horses representing the various contrada (city district) racing around the square to the delight of a huge and passionate audience.
July is also the month of various music festivals:
Puccini Festival; In honor of the famous opera composer and Tuscannative Giacomo Puccini, the town of Lucca hosts a series of programs in the open-air theater on lake Massaciuccoli for a month starting in late July.
Lucca SummerFestival; An annual event that draws international artists to the stage of one of Tuscany’s most esteemed music events taking place in Piazza Napoleone, right in the heart of Lucca.
Pistoia Blues; Feel the beat when the historical heart of Pistoia hosts international performances for a series of Blues acts.
